Rickie Haywood-Williams, Melvin Odoom and Dean McCullough are to leave BBC Radio 1 as part of a schedule shake-up that will see the station's output reshaped under its new controller, in a move that has prompted an outpouring of affection from listeners who have followed the trio through multiple time slots over nearly two decades.
The presenters, who have been a fixture on Radio 1 since 2007, most recently hosted the mid-morning show. Their departure is the most significant presenter change since the station's new controller took over earlier this year and signals an acceleration of the generational shift that has been underway at Radio 1 for several years.
The trio released a joint statement describing their departure as "the end of an era" and thanking listeners for their loyalty. "We've grown up on this station, and so have our listeners," they said. "It's been the privilege of our professional lives, and we leave with nothing but love for Radio 1 and everyone who makes it."
The schedule changes will be announced in full next month, but the BBC has confirmed that new presenters will be drawn from a diverse shortlist that includes several names currently on Radio 1Xtra and the Asian Network. The station's strategy of targeting 15-29 year-olds requires periodic presenter refreshment to maintain relevance with a demographic that ages out of the target range.
The trio are expected to move to a commercial broadcaster, with several offers reportedly under consideration. Their departure marks the end of one of the longest-running presenter partnerships in British radio history.
